UK’s biggest tax payer opens school for the gifted in London

A Russian mathematician, recognized as the UK’s biggest taxpayer in 2022, intends to open a math school in London.

Alexander Gerko, billionaire and founder of London trading company XTX Markets, is launching a new type of private school in north London for children with outstanding math skills. Herko himself attended a math special school in Moscow from the age of 12 and is now keen to help educate British children. The school will be called 1729 Maths School – after the Hardy-Ramanujan number, which is associated with an anecdote from the book “Apologia Mathematica”.

The school, which will open next September, will accept students regardless of their financial situation, The Times writes. The scholarship program at the new school, according to Gerko, will be “unprecedented and completely independent of family income.” “From day one, we want everyone who deserves to get into the school to have that opportunity,” he emphasizes.

The learning process will be built around a deep immersion in science: classes will meet six days a week and will include competitions and outside classes and lectures. Admission to the school will be based not only on level of preparation, but also on a genuine interest in the subject. The school will educate students from grades 7 to 13 (11 to 18 in the British system) with the goal of producing world-class mathematicians. Both day and boarding schooling will be available.

The project is funded by Gherko himself and his wife Elena, who works as an economist at the Bank of England. According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Herko’s fortune is estimated at 9 billion pounds, and the amount of his charitable donations in recent years has exceeded 100 million pounds.

Alex Gerko, 43, was recognized as the UK’s biggest taxpayer by The Sunday Times in 2022, having paid 487 million pounds (about $603 million) in taxes to the budget. Gerko was born and raised in Moscow and graduated from Moscow State University’s Mechmat department, where he earned a degree in mathematics. He started his career in trading at Deutsche Bank, then worked at hedge fund GSA Capital, and in 2015 he founded XTX Markets in London, one of the largest trading companies in Europe. After the war in Ukraine began, Gerko openly condemned the Kremlin’s actions. He renounced his Russian citizenship, British media noted.
